Resilience: Your Reaction to Adversity

In the midst of chaos, do you adapt well or rebound? How do you know if you are resilience or not?

Having resilience means being strong amidst adversity. Resilience lets you see past the problem and help you live a better life. Strong resilience won’t let a setback get the worst of you. But what makes a person resilient anyway? How do you build resilience in the face of adversity? Find out as we explore how resilience works and how to build resilience.

Resilience with age

Adults may find that they are resilient or not as resilient based on how they grew up. For example, adults who had a stable parent or guardian during development. They tend to find it easier to get past chaos and adapt to change. Having a key figure, helping you cope and adapt to hard situations, while facing adversity may be key. Their resilience is strong. It could be biological as well. There are studies that prove hardship adaptability go with a child’s environment as they grow up. This may have something to do with your resilience. If you don’t find yourself very resilient, don’t worry, there are ways to build resilience.

Why resilience is key

It is important to build resilience or adapt to changes because of your health. When facing adversity, mental health is going to be of the most importance. Resilience protects those who are at risk of anxiety and depression. It helping beat out the symptoms. Having strong resilience makes you likely to cope better.

How to build resilience

Cultivate strong relationships:

Whether it is with family, your partner, or a friend. Having some support and a person to talk to is important when facing adversity. You can join various organizations, religious groups, or even lean on coworkers.

Live with a purpose:

Do something positive each day that will make you feel good. You can do this with hobbies or with your career. It’s important to set goals and work towards something that will bring you joy in the future.

Strengthen your coping skills:

When something bad happened earlier in life, how did you face those problems? Learn from your past challenges and adversities. Identify positive and negative behavior patterns. Discover the ways you could make a positive change. Learn how to strengthen your skills in the future. Channel these patterns through painting, drawing, or writing. Talking about your past challenges to a person or groups of people.

Be accepting and positive to change:

Looking at changes in a positive light gives you the light at the end of the tunnel when facing adversity. Remaining hopeful and anticipating change fend off anxiety and builds resilience.

Practice self-care:

Start putting yourself first: What will bring you joy? You could start by picking up a hobby or even meditating. You can even start tonight by making sure you get enough sleep each night. Eat a healthy diet full of fruits, vegetables, and protein. Don’t forget to get outside and get plenty of physical exercise.

Have a plan:

The best way to look adversity straight in the face is to be proactive. Keep working at every setback with plenty of patience and time. As you become proactive, do the right thing to plan and take action. Improvement will take work, but remember that it will get better.

After all, I agree with Elder Dieter Uchtdorf when he said that "It’s your reaction to adversity, not adversity itself that determines how your life’s story will develop."
